Deputy Chief F. Jack Pilecki has been named as Wellesley’s Chief of Police following the retirement of Chief Terrence M. Cunningham. Chief Cunningham’s last day at the Wellesley Police Department will be February 5, 2017 (Super Bowl Sunday) and Deputy Chief Pilecki will take over on February 6, 2017.
Deputy Chief Pilecki is a 34 year veteran of the Wellesley Police Department, having been appointed to the department in July of 1983. The Deputy Chief served as a patrolman until 1992, when he was appointed as the department’s court prosecutor. The Court Prosecutor acts as a liaison between the Wellesley Police Department and the Dedham District Court.
In 1997, Deputy Chief Pilecki was promoted to sergeant where he supervised the evening and overnight shifts in the patrol division. In 2001, Deputy Chief Pilecki was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and commanded the entire patrol division as well as the Emergency Communication Center.
In 2013, Deputy Chief Pilecki was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief. As Deputy Chief, he oversaw the day to day operation of the department, as well as large scale events and incidents. Deputy Chief Pilecki implemented much of the changes that occurred to Boston Marathon security in Wellesley following the 2013 Boston bombings. This was a significant task, and Deputy Chief Pilecki worked and coordinated with many other local, state, and Federal agencies during the transition.
Deputy Chief Pilecki also currently serves as the chair of the Wellesley Traffic Committee, a collaborative group comprised of town departments that solves long term traffic issues within the town.
Deputy Chief Pilecki will become Wellesley’s 9th Chief of Police since the department’s inception in 1893.
Governor Baker stopped by the Wellesley Town Hall to officially congratulate Deputy Chief Pilecki prior to him being sworn in as the next Chief of Police.
Deputy Chief Pilecki was formally sworn in as the Chief of Police on Monday, January 30, 2017 by the Wellesley Board of Selectmen and the Town Clerk. The swearing in ceremony was part of the regular Board of Selectman’s meeting. Chief Terrence Cunningham, who retires in the first week of February, formally pinned the Chief’s badge on Chief Pilecki during the meeting.
Most of the members of the Wellesley Police Department attended the swearing in ceremony. Chief Pilecki and Chief Cunningham addressed the department on the Town Hall steps following the official swearing in process. The department then saluted both Chief Cunningham and Chief Pilecki.
